3 Strand Dock Lines
Why 3 Strand Nylon?
Nylon rope is inherently elastic and is widely used for anchoring and dock lines, but 3 strand (twisted rope) is significantly more elastic than double braid rope due largely to its construction method. Yarns are wound into strands and strands are wound into rope, not too unlike a series of springs. Its high elasticity, durability in the marine environment and high strength, make 3 strand ideal for docking. It's also less expensive than double braid (~30%) and it generally holds up better for dock lines than braided lines. 3-strand line is commonly used for permanent, winter lines and should be used in areas subject to frequent or extreme storms.
3 Strand Dock Lines from 48° North Marine
Our 3 strand lines are handmade in Bellingham, WA using high-quality, marine grade nylon rope and are available in line diameters from 3/8" - 1" and in lengths from 10' - 75'. They are professionally spliced with 5-7 tucks, the splices are pre-stressed to prevent pull-through and the splice tails are melted to prevent fraying. The bitter end is heavily melted to prevent unravelling and then dipped for a clean finish.
