Why 3-Strand Nylon
3-Strand, or twisted, rope is ideal for dock lines, especially for those winter lines you don't have to handle frequently. Nylon rope is inherently elastic, but 3-strand nylon is almost 50% more elastic than its double-braided cousin. While not quite as strong as braided line, it has plenty strong to handle dock loads. 3-strand is about half the price of braided line and is relatively abrasion and UV resistant but it gets stiff and rough on the hands. All these attributes make for great winter lines and you can keep your nice braided lines when you're on the move in the summer.
Dock Lines from 48 North Marine
Our 3-strand dock lines are handmade in Bellingham, WA using high-quality nylon rope and they come in line diameters from 3/8" - 1". Frankly, it's difficult to compete with the commodity pricing found in smaller diameter lines but we offer them to ensure we have a complete offering. However, our sweet spot is larger, harder-to-find lines. We stock popular lengths in the various rope diameters and we offer made-to-order services in the larger diameters. We offer all lines with chafe sleeves for the line and/or optionally spliced into the soft eye. We offer 2 or 3 sizes (12", 18" & 24") in the larger diameters. All lines are finished with heavy melt on the bitter end and finished with whipping thread.
