Mooring Bridles - Transient

Product Description

Our transient mooring bridles are perfect for folks moving from ball to ball during the cruising season.  Add your favorite mooring hook, snap hook or shackle and you're all set.

We have stock bridles (we make them in the off-season) in popular sizes for quick ship (usually 1-3 days), and as with most of our products, we have a made-to-order offering that allows you to customize your bridle.  This is helpful for catamarans, boats with uncommon deck hardware configurations, or with unusually high freeboard.

Our mooring bridles are handmade in Bellingham, WA using high-quality 3-strand nylon and come in several sizes and lengths to fit most boats.  Our bridles are V spliced (essentially a mooring pendant with a 2nd line spliced into it) resulting in a single hard eye (thimbled eye) on the hook end.  We splice in 2 soft eyes for easy attachment to the bow cleats and we include 18" of chafe sleeves to protect the lines from the chocks.

We recommend this bridle for transient use only and it should NOT be used for permanent moorage where the boat will be unattended for long periods of time.  For permanent mooring, we recommend using a different type of line on a bridle with two independent-legged for redundancy and considerably more chafe protection.  We are currently working on a mooring bridle designed for permanent use.

Bridle Sizing

Length

The rule of thumb for mooring bridle sizing for monohulls is 2.5 times your vessel's freeboard (distance from water line to deck surface) at the bow.  Example: if the freeboard = 4', then the bridle should be approx 10' long.  Choosing a line longer 3 times freeboard might result in tangled lines in the morning and choosing a bridle that's too short might cause mild snatch loading when pitching in waves.

For catamarans, consider sizing that yields something akin to an isosceles triangle with 67.5° - 45° - 67.5° or inside angles.  Example: if the beam is 20', then the legs should be approx 26'.  Obviously, there might not be sufficient room to swing with 26' in some mooring fields but ideally you'll want to the inside angle where the lines meet the ball to 45°.  Since these are V bridles, they must be deployed as long as possible for maximum strength as the splice cannot endure high lateral load (strain forces pulling the legs in opposite directions at the splice); splices are designed to be loaded longitudinally.  The closer the inside angle of the legs, the better.

Diameter

The diameter should be the same as your dock lines.
Vessel Length
Line Diameter
20' - 30'
3/8" - 1/2"
30' - 40'
1/2" - 5/8"
40' - 50'
5/8" - 3/4"
50' - 60'
3/4" - 1"

Catamarans and vessels considered heavy for their class, should size up one.

Deployment

Add you favorite mooring or snap hook, or shackle and you're all set.  When purchasing these products, be sure they are load rated and made by a reputable manufacturer if possible.  There are many foreign made hardware products flooding the US market and while some are top quality, others are basically junk.  If using a shackle, consider a bow shackle with a captive pin.  It might be a good idea to have a spare onboard.

This bridle is a Y spliced bridle and like all bridles using this design, the line from where the 2nd line is spliced in to the hard eye is essentially a single line snubber.  While this type of bridle is very strong, the legs are not fully independent and thus not fully redundant.  If you have a forecast for high winds, it is suggested a 2nd back up line be deployed.  A bow line looped through the ring and tied off to the opposite bow cleat is suggested.  Cheap insurance in terms of both time and money.
