Mooring Lines, Ropes, Pendants, Pennants & Bridles

mooring lines, ropes and pendants

Range of Mooring Products

For most of us, mooring or docking is straight-forward: pull into a slip where an array of cleats await the lines, or turn the bow up to a ball and make the lines to a ring or chain.  For others, the process is not so clear-cut.  Boats have a variety of mooring or docking hardware configurations and these range from bow eyes to bow cleats, and bitts, posts and cleats set well inboard not to mention shore side with bollards, hooks, pilings, stanchions, etc.  At 48° North Marine we try to offer a full range of mooring pendants, lines and bridles to accommodate the conventional - transient and permanent- and the less conventional.

If you don't see it here, please contact us about a custom product.

Product Material & Construction

Line

At 48° North Marine, we specialize in anchoring, mooring and docking (yep, those are all mooring) products.  Where strength and high-elasticity are desired, we use a high-quality 3-strand nylon line.  Where high strength with good elasticity are desired, we use 12-strand nylon.  All of our line meets, or exceeds, the Cordage Institute's standards for testing fiber rope.  Nylon is the ideal rope material for mooring applications due to its:
  • Tensile strength
  • Elasticity, or elongation properties, allow it to absorb considerable energy generated by boat movement
  • Low UV degradation
  • Low cost
  • General chemical resistance
  • Relatively high tolerance to chafe
  • Can be saturated with saltwater for extended periods without significant degradation

Hardware

Stainless steel (SS) is ideal for the marine environment and we use it almost exclusively in our products. We found SS products are generally not much more expensive than the galvanized equivalents and the quality is far more consistent than galvanized.  I've done my share of filing on "galvy" to remove slag and casting burrs only for it to rust in those places after a couple of months.  Paying an extra $4 for SS thimble is worth not having to clean the dang deck of rust stains.

We attempt to purchase all SS hardware in 316, but sometimes have to buy it in 304.  316 is slightly more resistant saltwater corrosion.  304 performs fine, especially when used in cast products.

Finally, we've been using a variety of brands over the years and we've learned which raw materials work best in our products.  We are increasingly consolidating around these raw materials because they offer high-quality but at a reasonable cost.
